The 1998 Japanese horror film about a cursed videotape whose viewers die after seven days is Ringu.
Directed by Hideo Nakata, Ringu is based on Koji Suzuki’s 1991 novel Ring. The story follows journalist Reiko Asakawa as she investigates an urban legend involving a mysterious videotape, a disturbing phone call, and the death of anyone who watches the recording unless the curse is passed on.
The supernatural force behind the curse is Sadako Yamamura, whose story connects psychic powers, family trauma, and a sealed well. The film’s most famous image—Sadako emerging from a television—became a landmark of J-horror.
Ringu is often confused with The Grudge, also known as Ju-On, but those films concern a different curse and mythology. Dark Water is another Japanese horror film, but it does not center on a seven-day videotape curse.
