The 1996 teen horror film about a group of witches starring Fairuza Balk is The Craft.
Directed by Andrew Fleming, the film follows Sarah Bailey, played by Robin Tunney, after she transfers to a Los Angeles Catholic high school and befriends Nancy, Bonnie, and Rochelle. The four girls practice witchcraft, initially using it to address personal problems and social pressures.
Fairuza Balk plays Nancy Downs, whose increasingly powerful magic becomes destructive. The film’s central idea is that supernatural power magnifies the characters’ existing emotions, ambitions, and resentments. Its story therefore moves from friendship and wish fulfillment toward betrayal and consequences.
The Craft is often confused with Hocus Pocus, another 1990s witch-themed film, but Hocus Pocus is a family-oriented fantasy comedy about three resurrected witches. The Craft is darker, more contemporary, and rooted in teen drama and occult horror. It was released in 1996 and became a lasting cult favorite.
