What 1993 Steven Spielberg film about Oskar Schindler won Best Picture?

The story behind the answer

The 1993 Steven Spielberg film about Oskar Schindler that won Best Picture is Schindler's List.

The film stars Liam Neeson as Schindler, a German industrialist who used his factories during World War II to protect more than a thousand mostly Polish Jewish people from Nazi persecution and extermination. Ralph Fiennes plays SS officer Amon Göth, while Ben Kingsley portrays Schindler’s accountant Itzhak Stern.

Steven Spielberg directed and produced the film from Steven Zaillian’s screenplay, adapted from Thomas Keneally’s 1982 historical novel Schindler’s Ark. Spielberg filmed much of it in black and white, giving the drama a stark, documentary-like appearance; the girl in the red coat is a notable exception.

Schindler’s List won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Original Score. It is not the same film as The Pianist, another acclaimed Holocaust drama released nearly a decade later.
