What 1984 Troma film features a janitor who becomes a mutant superhero?

The 1984 Troma film featuring a janitor who becomes a mutant superhero is The Toxic Avenger. It follows Melvin Ferd, a timid and bullied janitor working at a health club in Tromaville, New Jersey.

A cruel prank sends Melvin falling from a window into a truckload of toxic waste. The accident transforms him into a grotesquely deformed mutant with extraordinary strength. He adopts the name Toxie and begins attacking criminals and violent wrongdoers around Tromaville.

The film was produced and released by Troma Entertainment, with Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman directing. Its blend of splatter horror, slapstick, superhero parody, and deliberately outrageous humor made it a defining example of low-budget cult cinema.

A common mix-up is The Toxic Crusaders, which was an animated television series and merchandise franchise inspired by the film. Class of Nuke 'Em High is another Troma title, but it is a separate 1986 film about students affected by radioactive contamination.
