The 1984 film starring Emilio Estevez about a repo man chasing a Chevrolet Malibu is Repo Man.
Written and directed by Alex Cox in his feature-film debut, Repo Man follows Otto Maddox, a disaffected young punk in Los Angeles who takes a job repossessing cars. He learns the trade from veteran repo man Bud, played by Harry Dean Stanton, while becoming involved in the hunt for a mysterious 1964 Chevrolet Malibu.
The Malibu is not an ordinary vehicle: its trunk contains a glowing substance associated with extraterrestrials, and anyone who opens it risks being destroyed. That science-fiction thread is blended with punk music, deadpan comedy, satire of consumer culture, and the rough visual style of independent filmmaking. Estevez plays Otto, while Stanton gives the film its older, more experienced counterpoint.
The title is sometimes confused with car-chase films such as The Car or The Road Warrior. Repo Man is specifically the Los Angeles punk science-fiction comedy centered on vehicle repossession and the strange Malibu. Its soundtrack, featuring Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and Iggy Pop, also helped establish its cult status.
