What 1981 Sam Raimi film features a group of friends in a cabin fighting demonic forces?

The story behind the answer

The 1981 Sam Raimi film about friends fighting demonic forces in an isolated cabin is The Evil Dead.

The film follows five college students who spend time at a remote cabin in the woods. There they discover an audio recording and the Book of the Dead, whose recitations unleash demons and spirits. The supernatural outbreak turns the group against itself as several members become possessed.

Bruce Campbell plays Ash Williams, who gradually becomes the story’s central survivor. Written and directed by Raimi in his feature-film debut, The Evil Dead combined extreme gore, kinetic camera movement and dark comedy despite its modest independent production.

Army of Darkness is a later sequel, while Evil Dead II is a 1987 remake-like continuation with overlapping material. The Cabin in the Woods is a separate 2011 horror film. The original cabin-and-demons premise belongs to The Evil Dead.
