What 1972 crime drama about the Corleone family won Best Picture?

The story behind the answer

The 1972 crime drama about the Corleone family that won Best Picture is The Godfather.

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the film adapts Mario Puzo’s bestselling 1969 novel. Marlon Brando plays Vito Corleone, the family patriarch, while Al Pacino plays Michael, his youngest son. The story traces Michael’s transformation from reluctant outsider to the new head of the Corleone crime family.

Paramount Pictures acquired the novel’s rights before it became a bestseller and initially wanted a relatively inexpensive production. Coppola’s choice to treat the material as a serious family saga, combined with Gordon Willis’s shadowy cinematography and Nino Rota’s memorable score, helped establish the film as a landmark of the gangster genre.

The Godfather won three Oscars at the 45th Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actor for Brando, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Puzo and Coppola. Its Best Original Score nomination was withdrawn after the Academy noticed similarities between Rota’s theme and music from an earlier film. The movie began a trilogy, followed by The Godfather Part II in 1974 and Part III in 1990.
