The 1969 Isley Brothers hit featuring the line “It’s your thing, do what you wanna do” is “It’s Your Thing.”
The song was recorded in January 1969 at A&R Studios in New York City and released as a single on February 16 of that year. It came from the album It’s Our Thing and marked a creative turning point after the Isley Brothers left Motown and reactivated their own T-Neck label.
Ronald Isley wrote the song, with help from his brothers O’Kelly and Rudolph Isley. Its defiant message reflected the group’s desire for artistic independence, while the bass-heavy groove placed it firmly in the emerging funk tradition. Sixteen-year-old Ernie Isley played bass on the recording, one of his earliest major appearances with the group.
The single reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart. It is sometimes confused with “I Turned You On,” another 1969 Isley Brothers single, but the quoted lyric unmistakably identifies “It’s Your Thing.”
