The 1958 MGM musical that won all nine Academy Awards for which it was nominated was Gigi.
Directed by Vincente Minnelli, Gigi is a musical romantic comedy based on Colette's 1944 novella. Leslie Caron plays Gigi, a Parisian girl being prepared by older relatives for life as a courtesan, while Maurice Chevalier and Hermione Gingold portray members of the worldly older generation guiding her. Louis Jourdan plays Gaston, the wealthy young man whose relationship with Gigi changes the story's expectations.
At the 31st Academy Awards in 1959, Gigi won Best Picture, Best Director, adapted screenplay, color cinematography, costume design, film editing, art direction, scoring of a musical picture, and Best Song for “Gigi.” Its nine-for-nine sweep was a record at the time.
The film is often remembered as the last major achievement of MGM's famed Freed Unit, producer Arthur Freed's musical production team. It was also selected for the National Film Registry in 1991 for its cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance.
