During an oppressive heat wave, Sherman meets an unnamed young woman living in the apartment above him, played by Monroe. His fantasies about an affair collide with his conscience and his increasingly comic attempts at self-control.

The movie is adapted from George Axelrod’s successful 1952 stage play. Wilder’s film became one of Monroe’s signature vehicles, especially because of the famous scene in which air from a subway grate lifts her white dress.
