What 1939 musical film features the song "Over the Rainbow"?

The story behind the answer

The 1939 musical film featuring the song “Over the Rainbow” is The Wizard of Oz. MGM’s lavish adaptation stars Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale, a Kansas farm girl swept into the fantastical Land of Oz by a tornado.

The film is based on L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Its Kansas scenes were filmed in black and white with sepia tones, while Dorothy’s arrival in Oz famously opens into three-strip Technicolor. “Over the Rainbow,” written by Harold Arlen with lyrics by Yip Harburg, expresses Dorothy’s longing for a place beyond her troubles and became Garland’s signature song.

The song was nearly cut because MGM executives thought it slowed the opening and was too sophisticated for children. It survived after producer Mervyn LeRoy and director Victor Fleming fought to retain it, and it later won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The movie received five Oscar nominations and remains closely associated with classic Hollywood musicals, even though it did not become profitable until its 1949 re-release.
