Walter Matthau won which Oscar category for The Fortune Cookie?

The story behind the answer

Walter Matthau won which Oscar category for The Fortune Cookie? Best Supporting Actor. He won the Academy Award for his performance as shyster lawyer William H. “Whiplash Willie” Gingrich.

The Fortune Cookie, released in 1966, was Billy Wilder’s dark comedy about a television cameraman injured during a football game and the elaborate insurance scheme devised by his brother-in-law. Jack Lemmon plays the injured cameraman, Harry Hinkle, while Matthau plays the opportunistic attorney who tries to turn the accident into a lucrative settlement.

The Oscar was especially notable because it began the celebrated screen partnership between Matthau and Lemmon. They first worked together in this film and later reunited in The Odd Couple, which became one of their signature collaborations. Matthau’s performance combined aggressive comic timing with the character’s calculating, morally dubious behavior.

The award is sometimes confused with the film’s screenplay recognition. Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond were nominated for writing, but Matthau’s win was for acting in a supporting role. He later received Best Actor nominations for Kotch and The Sunshine Boys.
