Under what brand did Campbell introduce SpaghettiOs in 1965?
Answer
Franco-American
Answer
Franco-American
Campbell introduced SpaghettiOs in 1965 under the Franco-American brand.
Franco-American was a Campbell Soup Company brand used for canned soups, gravies, and pasta products. The ring-shaped pasta was developed by marketing manager Donald Goerke and introduced nationally in 1965 as a child-friendly alternative to long spaghetti.
The small circular pieces were practical as well as distinctive. They survived the canning and reheating process, were easy to scoop with a spoon, and reduced the mess associated with eating strands of pasta. Other shapes were reportedly considered, but the O became the product’s defining design.
The product’s advertising helped make the brand name memorable, especially through the “Uh-Oh, SpaghettiOs” jingle and the promise of “the neat round spaghetti you can eat with a spoon.” The Franco-American label is also a frequent source of confusion: it was a Campbell brand, not an independent Italian manufacturer. The Franco-American name was eventually phased out on many pasta products, which later appeared under Campbell branding.
