Spaghetti tacos originated as a running joke on the Nickelodeon sitcom iCarly.
The unusual dish combines spaghetti and tomato sauce with a hard taco shell. On the show, Spencer Shay, iCarly’s eccentric older brother, claims to have invented it when he could not decide whether to prepare spaghetti or tacos for dinner. The idea first appeared in the episode “iWill Date Freddie,” which aired in October 2007.
The gag proved popular enough to return in five additional episodes. It received especially prominent treatment in the season-three episode “iCook,” where Carly, Sam, and Freddie enter a spoof cooking competition modeled on televised food contests. Their challenge is to make the best spaghetti taco against a fictional celebrity chef.
A common mix-up is assuming spaghetti tacos are a traditional regional food or an established fusion dish. Their recognizable modern identity comes from iCarly, where the joke introduced them to a broad young audience and inspired real-world recipes and novelty meals.
