Tumblr's name comes from what kind of short-form blogs?

The story behind the answer

Tumblr’s name comes from what kind of short-form blogs? The answer is tumblelogs.

A tumblelog was an early form of short-form blog that collected brief items such as links, quotations, photographs, conversations, and quick observations. The format was looser and more eclectic than a traditional blog, which often centered on longer, regularly written entries. Tumblr’s name was derived from this idea of a compact, mixed-media stream.

David Karp, Tumblr’s founder, had been interested in tumblelogs before creating the platform. Development began in 2006, and Tumblr launched in February 2007 with tools designed for posting different media types quickly. That flexible approach helped distinguish it from conventional blogging services.

The term is sometimes confused with “weblog,” the older word from which “blog” developed. Tumblr is also often described as a microblogging service, but microblogging is the broader category, not the specific word behind the brand name. “Photoblogs” and “vlogs” describe particular media-focused formats, whereas tumblelogs could combine many kinds of short posts.
