Answer
World War II
Answer
World War II
The United Nations was founded after the conclusion of World War II. Although its planning began during the war, the UN Charter was signed on June 26, 1945, shortly after Germany's surrender, and the organization officially came into existence on October 24, 1945.
The UN was created to promote international peace, security and cooperation, and to replace the League of Nations, which had failed to prevent the outbreak of another world war. Its origins included Allied declarations and conferences during World War II, including the 1941 Atlantic Charter, the 1942 Declaration by United Nations and the 1944 Dumbarton Oaks discussions.
The founding conference took place in San Francisco between April and June 1945. Representatives of 50 countries completed and signed the Charter there; Poland later joined the founding membership, bringing the total to 51. The UN's original permanent Security Council members were the United States, United Kingdom, Soviet Union, China and France. Its headquarters is in New York City, while major offices are also located in Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi.
