The Sudirman Cup badminton championship is named after Indonesian administrator Dick Sudirman.
Sudirman was a leading figure in Indonesian badminton and served as president of the International Badminton Federation, now known as the Badminton World Federation. The mixed-team world championship was created in his honour and first staged in 1989 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
A Sudirman Cup tie combines men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. That format distinguishes it from the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup, which separately focus on men’s and women’s national teams.
The trophy itself is a distinctive silver-and-gold vessel shaped with imagery associated with badminton. Indonesia won the inaugural tournament, but China became the dominant nation in later editions. The event is normally held every two years and is one of badminton’s most important tests of overall national depth.
