Answer
Stax Records
The Staple Singers' hit "I'll Take You There" was released on Stax Records.
Written and produced by Stax executive Al Bell, the song became one of the Staple Singers' defining recordings. The group had roots in gospel, led by family members Roebuck “Pops” Staples and his daughters Mavis, Yvonne, and Cleotha. Bell helped guide their transition toward a broader soul and funk audience while preserving the emotional directness of their gospel background.
Stax released the single in February 1972. Its relaxed groove, prominent bass line, rhythmic guitar, and Mavis Staples's unmistakable lead vocal gave it a distinctive sound. The recording topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the charts for 15 weeks.
Listeners sometimes associate the song with Motown because both labels were central to classic Black popular music. Stax, however, was based in Memphis and was closely associated with Southern soul, while Motown was headquartered in Detroit. The song appeared on the Staple Singers' 1972 album Be Altitude: Respect Yourself.
