The Pyramid of Unas is famous for containing the Pyramid Texts, ancient Egyptian spells carved into its underground chambers.

Unas was the ninth and final pharaoh of Egypt’s Fifth Dynasty, and his pyramid was built at Saqqara during the 24th century BC. Although it is the smallest pyramid of the Old Kingdom, its inscriptions made it exceptionally important to Egyptologists.

The pyramid contains 283 spells, including protective formulas, offering rituals, resurrection texts, and passages intended to guide the dead king into the afterlife. They were carved in vertical columns and originally painted blue, while the burial chamber’s ceiling was decorated with stars.

The texts first became known from Unas’s pyramid, although many spells were probably much older. They later influenced the Coffin Texts and, eventually, the Book of the Dead. A common mix-up is treating these three collections as identical: they are related traditions from different periods and funerary contexts.
