The Pichichi Trophy is named after which Athletic Bilbao forward?

The story behind the answer

The Pichichi Trophy is named after which Athletic Bilbao forward? Rafael Moreno Aranzadi. He was widely known by the nickname Pichichi and played as a forward for Athletic Bilbao in the club’s early years.

Born in Bilbao in 1892, Moreno Aranzadi became one of Spanish football’s first celebrated goal scorers. His nickname reportedly referred to his slight build, and his attacking reputation made “Pichichi” a lasting synonym for a prolific scorer in Spanish football.

He played for Athletic during the 1910s and early 1920s, before Spain had a national league competition. He also represented Spain at the 1920 Olympic tournament, earning five international caps. Moreno Aranzadi died in 1922, aged 29, but his memory remained central to Athletic’s history.

Marca created the Pichichi Trophy in 1953, three decades after his death. The award therefore honours a pre-La Liga star rather than a modern league champion. Telmo Zarra, another legendary Athletic forward, is a different player and is remembered by the later Zarra Trophy for Spanish scorers.
