The Open Championship is one of the four major championships. Which of the other three is the youngest?

The story behind the answer

Of the other three men's major championships, the youngest is the Masters.

The Open Championship began in 1860, making it the oldest of the modern men's majors. The U.S. Open followed in 1895, and the PGA Championship was established in 1916. The Masters was first played in 1934 at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, making it the newest member of the traditional four-major group.

The tournament was originally called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament. Its founders, Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts, created it after Jones helped design Augusta National with architect Alister MacKenzie. Horton Smith won the inaugural event, which was held over 72 holes.

A common mix-up is to treat “youngest” as meaning the newest tournament venue or the youngest champion. Here it refers to the date each championship was established. The modern major lineup became widely accepted during the mid-20th century, especially after Arnold Palmer popularised the idea of winning all four tournaments in a single career sweep.
