The Office (UK) originated in which country?

The story behind the answer

The Office (UK) originated in the United Kingdom.

The original series was created, written and directed by British comedians Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. It follows employees at the Slough branch of Wernham Hogg, a fictional paper company, and was first broadcast by the BBC in the United Kingdom in 2001.

The programme’s mockumentary style, awkward workplace humour and single-camera presentation made it distinctly different from many traditional studio sitcoms. Its success led to adaptations in numerous countries, including the highly successful American version starring Steve Carell. Those international remakes can cause quiz players to associate the title primarily with the United States, but the British series came first.

The original British run consisted of two six-episode series, followed by a two-part Christmas special in 2003. It became one of Britain’s best-known comedy exports and helped popularise cringe comedy and mockumentary workplace storytelling internationally.
