The Netflix sequel Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life picks up nine years after the original series. The revival premiered in 2016, following the original show’s seven-season run, which ended in 2007.
Rather than continuing immediately after Rory’s farewell in the original finale, the four-part revival finds Lorelai, Rory, and Emily at very different stages of adulthood. The episodes are titled “Winter,” “Spring,” “Summer,” and “Fall,” giving the story the structure of a single changing year.
Rory is 32 in the revival and is trying to reestablish herself as a journalist. Lorelai is still running the Dragonfly Inn with Sookie’s help, while Emily is coping with the death of her husband, Richard, whose actor Edward Herrmann died in 2014.
Some summaries describe the gap as “nearly a decade” or “about ten years,” but nine years is the standard answer used for the timeline between the original finale and the Netflix revival.
