The movie White Christmas was originally released in 1954. Directed by Michael Curtiz, the Technicolor musical stars Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen as performers whose postwar careers become entangled with romance and a struggling Vermont inn.
The film grew out of the enormous popularity of Irving Berlin’s song “White Christmas,” first introduced by Crosby in the 1942 movie Holiday Inn. The later film uses a new arrangement of the song and expands its nostalgic wartime themes into a story about friendship, entertainment, and Christmas reconciliation.
White Christmas was produced and distributed by Paramount Pictures and became the first movie released using the studio’s VistaVision process. VistaVision used a larger area of 35mm film to create sharper, more detailed images, especially noticeable on wide theatrical screens.
Viewers sometimes confuse this movie with Holiday Inn because both feature Bing Crosby and “White Christmas.” They are separate films: Holiday Inn premiered in 1942, while the musical built around that song arrived twelve years later, in 1954.
