The indie pop-rock band The Cardigans hails from Sweden. The group formed in 1992 in Jönköping, a city in the southern Swedish province of Småland. Its original core lineup included singer Nina Persson, guitarist Peter Svensson, bassist Magnus Sveningsson, drummer Bengt Lagerberg, and keyboardist Lars-Olof Johansson.
The Cardigans released their debut album, Emmerdale, in 1994 and built an international audience with their polished blend of pop, alternative rock, and indie influences. Their 1995 album Life expanded their reputation beyond Sweden, while First Band on the Moon introduced “Lovefool,” their best-known international hit. The song later appeared prominently in the soundtrack to the 1996 film Romeo + Juliet.
Their other widely recognized tracks include “My Favourite Game” and “Erase/Rewind,” both associated with the 1998 album Gran Turismo. The band’s Swedish origin is sometimes obscured by its international success and English-language songs, but its formation, early recording career, and musical identity are firmly rooted in Sweden.
