The California Kid hot rod is based on a Ford coupe from what model year?

The story behind the answer

The California Kid hot rod is based on a 1934 Ford coupe.

More precisely, it is a customized 1934 Ford three-window coupe. Pete Chapouris chose the body for a traditional hot-rod treatment, even though that approach was considered old-fashioned by some enthusiasts during the early 1970s, when “resto-rodding” was fashionable.

The original custom was completed in black with a classic flame job and 1960s-era Halibrand wheels. Its silhouette and relatively faithful treatment of the Ford design helped make it instantly recognizable rather than disguising it beneath an entirely new body shape.

For the television movie The California Kid, the film company made several changes. It added dummy sidepipes and a C-channel rear bumper, while replacing the Halibrand wheels with period-style steel wheels and Ford hubcaps. These movie alterations sometimes lead people to picture a different car, but the underlying hot rod remains Chapouris’s 1934 Ford coupe.

The car’s profile became especially influential after its 1973 magazine appearance and 1974 screen debut, prompting many replicas and tribute builds.
