The statement appears in Matthew 6:24 as part of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. In the King James Version, the verse reads, "Ye cannot serve God and mammon." The word mammon comes from an Aramaic term associated with wealth, money, possessions, or material riches. In this context, it is presented as a competing master rather than merely as coins or property.

The same teaching is echoed in Luke 16:13, where many modern translations render mammon as "money" or "wealth." That translation can make the verse easier to understand, but Mammon is the traditional answer expected in Bible trivia and in older English versions.

The passage does not simply say that owning money is inherently wrong. Its warning concerns divided loyalty and allowing wealth to become the controlling priority. A common mistake is answering "the Devil"; some later interpretations connect Mammon with evil, but the biblical wording directly contrasts God with Mammon.
