The Band featured Levon Helm on what instrument?

The story behind the answer

The Band featured Levon Helm on drums. Helm was the group's best-known drummer and also one of its three lead vocalists.

Born Mark Lavon Helm in Arkansas in 1940, he joined Ronnie Hawkins's backing group, the Hawks, in the late 1950s. The Hawks later became Bob Dylan's touring band before evolving into The Band, whose classic lineup included Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson, and Helm.

Helm's drumming helped give songs such as “The Weight,” “Up on Cripple Creek,” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” their earthy, rhythm-and-blues character. He also played mandolin, guitar, and harmonica on some recordings, which can cause occasional confusion about his primary role.

The Band's farewell concert, held on November 25, 1976, became the subject of Martin Scorsese's documentary The Last Waltz. Helm continued performing and recording as a solo artist and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Band in 1994.
