Their origin story includes an impromptu jam session after several members shared a Flaming Volcano cocktail at a Chinese restaurant in Athens. The group played its first concert at a Valentine’s Day party in 1977, helping establish the eccentric local scene that later produced several nationally important bands.

The band’s name came from the beehive hairstyles worn by Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson, whose shape reminded the members of the nose cone of a B-52 bomber. Their early sound mixed new wave, dance-rock, surf influences, camp humor, and unconventional performance styles.

Athens is sometimes overlooked because the band later became strongly associated with New York’s club scene. However, Athens, Georgia—not Athens, Greece—was the group’s birthplace and early creative home. Their songs include “Rock Lobster,” “Love Shack,” and “Roam.”
