Tesla became the first automaker to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization in October 2021.
Tesla crossed the milestone on October 25, 2021, after its shares rose sharply following news that Hertz had ordered 100,000 electric vehicles. The event made Tesla one of the world’s most valuable companies by market capitalization and placed it above the valuation of every traditional automaker at that time.
Tesla’s business includes electric vehicles, battery storage, charging infrastructure, and solar-energy products. Investors often valued the company not only for current vehicle deliveries but also for expectations about future production, software, autonomy, and energy businesses.
Market capitalization is not the same as the number of vehicles produced or revenue earned. Tesla’s valuation has fluctuated considerably since the milestone as interest rates, deliveries, competition, and investor expectations changed.
