Tencent's globally popular messaging app, launched in 2011, is called what?

The story behind the answer

Tencent's globally popular messaging app, launched in 2011, is called WeChat.

Tencent launched the app in January 2011 under the Chinese name Weixin. It later adopted the international name WeChat as the service expanded outside mainland China. The app supports text and voice messaging, video calls, social feeds, payments, location sharing, and lightweight applications known as mini programs.

WeChat became much more than a conventional chat application in China. Its payment tools can be used for shopping, transfers, bills, transport, and other everyday services. This broad functionality has made it an important part of digital life for hundreds of millions of users.

QQ is another Tencent messaging service with a separate history and brand identity. LINE and KakaoTalk are major messaging platforms associated with other companies. Tencent, founded in 1998, has often ranked among the world's largest technology companies by market capitalization, with WeChat as one of its best-known products.
