Who became Microsoft’s chief executive officer in February 2014?

The story behind the answer

Satya Nadella became Microsoft’s chief executive officer in February 2014.

Nadella succeeded Steve Ballmer, who had led Microsoft since 2000. Before becoming CEO, Nadella held senior positions at Microsoft and became president of the company’s Server & Tools division in 2011. He joined Microsoft in 1992 after working at Sun Microsystems.

Born in Hyderabad, India, Nadella studied electrical engineering at Mangalore University, computer science at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, and business at the University of Chicago. His leadership emphasized cloud computing, subscriptions, developer tools, and cross-platform services.

Bill Gates co-founded Microsoft and remained chairman for many years, but he was not the CEO when Nadella took the role. Steve Ballmer was Nadella’s immediate predecessor.
