Tanzania's national flag was adopted on what date?

Tanzania's national flag was adopted on 30 June 1964. It was created after Tanganyika and Zanzibar united in April 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania.

The design merged important elements from both former states. Tanganyika contributed the green and black colors, while Zanzibar contributed blue. The resulting flag uses a gold-edged black diagonal band, with green in the upper section and light blue in the lower section.

Several dates connected with Tanzania's formation can cause confusion. Tanganyika became independent on 9 December 1961, and the Zanzibar Revolution began on 12 January 1964. The union itself took place in April, but the combined national flag was not adopted until 30 June 1964.

Zanzibar still has a regional flag, introduced in 2005, but Tanzania's national flag represents the union as a whole. Its 2:3 proportions and diagonal design also make it visually distinctive among African national flags.
