Swatch partnered with which automaker to develop the Smart car?
Answer
Daimler-Benz
Answer
Daimler-Benz
Swatch partnered with Daimler-Benz to develop the Smart car.
The project grew from Swatch chairman Nicolas Hayek’s idea for a small, efficient, highly customizable urban car using some of the brand’s watchmaking and marketing principles. After earlier discussions involving other manufacturers, Swatch and Daimler-Benz formed Micro Compact Car AG in 1994 to develop the vehicle.
Daimler-Benz supplied automotive engineering and manufacturing expertise, while Swatch contributed the compact-car concept, design ambitions, and branding vision. The name “smart” was derived from “Swatch Mercedes ART,” although the car’s final engineering and business model differed substantially from Hayek’s original Swatchmobile plans.
The first Smart City-Coupé debuted at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show and went on sale in Europe in 1998. Swatch later withdrew from the venture, and Daimler-Benz took full control of Micro Compact Car. Thus, Volkswagen was involved in an earlier stage of the broader concept, but Daimler-Benz was the automaker that formed the decisive development partnership and brought the Smart to market.
