Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam also plays guitar in the side-project band Brad. The Seattle group formed in 1992 and brought together Gossard with drummer Regan Hagar, vocalist Shawn Smith, and bassist Jeremy Toback. Its sound was less tied to Pearl Jam's arena-rock identity, allowing the musicians to explore looser alternative-rock and singer-songwriter influences.
Brad released its debut album, Shame, in 1993. The record became the band's best-known early statement and helped establish it as more than a temporary offshoot of Pearl Jam. Gossard contributed guitar and songwriting while continuing his work with Pearl Jam.
Brad is sometimes confused with Satchel because Hagar and Smith were also members of that Seattle band. The two groups shared personnel and the same regional music scene, but they were separate projects. Gossard has also participated in other collaborations, including Temple of the Dog and Painted Shield, making Pearl Jam's members especially active beyond the main band.
