Since which IPL season has DRS been used in all matches? The answer is 2018. The Decision Review System made its IPL debut during the 2018 season, after the BCCI approved its use for the tournament.
Before 2018, IPL matches relied on on-field umpires and the third umpire’s conventional television replays, but teams did not have formal reviews for decisions such as lbw or caught-behind dismissals. DRS added technologies including ball tracking and edge-detection tools to help correct clear umpiring errors.
The system was used from the opening match of IPL 2018, between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. A common mix-up is confusing the IPL’s 2018 introduction with international cricket, where DRS had already been used for several years. DRS also does not overturn every close call: “umpire’s call” can leave the original decision standing when the technology shows only marginal involvement of the stumps.
