Richard Alpert lived in the Canary Islands before reaching the Island.

In the 1867 flashback shown in Lost, Richard was known by his Spanish name, Ricardo, and lived on Tenerife in the Canary Islands with his wife, Isabella. The Atlantic archipelago was then part of Spain, and Richard and Isabella hoped to leave for the New World and build a new life there.

Their plans collapsed when Isabella became seriously ill. Richard rode to obtain medicine, accidentally killed the doctor during a desperate confrontation, and returned home too late to save her. He was arrested and sentenced to hang, but a priest sold him before the execution could take place.

Richard was placed aboard the Black Rock as a slave. The ship was caught in a violent storm and wrecked on the mysterious Island, where Jacob eventually recruited him as an intermediary. The Canary Islands are sometimes confused with the Channel Islands or other Atlantic archipelagos, but Tenerife is specifically identified in Richard’s backstory.
