Ramadan is the ninth month of which calendar?

The story behind the answer

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar with 12 months whose dates move through the solar year. Ramadan begins when the preceding month, Sha'ban, ends, and it concludes when the month of Shawwal begins.

Because lunar months are shorter than solar months, Ramadan shifts approximately 10 or 11 days earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar. This means Muslims in different regions experience Ramadan in every season over a repeating cycle.

The month is significant because Muslims traditionally observe fasting from dawn until sunset, alongside prayer, charity, and reflection. The calendar’s lunar structure also explains why Ramadan and Eid do not have fixed Gregorian dates.
