Orange juice is a good source of which vitamin?

The story behind the answer

Orange juice is a good source of vitamin C. Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble nutrient involved in collagen production, wound healing, immune function, and absorption of iron from plant foods.

A typical 250-mL cup of orange juice provides a substantial amount of vitamin C, although the exact quantity varies by orange variety, freshness, processing, and whether extra vitamin C has been added. Commercial juices may also be fortified with calcium or other nutrients.

The vitamin became especially associated with citrus during the history of scurvy prevention. Scurvy results from severe vitamin C deficiency, and citrus juice was used to protect sailors before scientists fully understood the nutrient involved. During World War II, researchers also developed frozen concentrated orange juice as a practical way to deliver vitamin C.

A common mix-up is assuming orange juice is nutritionally identical to a whole orange. Juice supplies vitamin C but usually contains less fiber and can deliver considerable natural sugar quickly. Whole fruit is generally more filling, while juice remains a convenient source of this vitamin.
