Disney’s 2020 live-action film Mulan debuted through Premier Access on Disney+.
The release was shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused repeated changes to the film’s theatrical schedule. Disney ultimately made the movie available to Disney+ subscribers who paid an additional Premier Access fee in markets where that option was offered. It later became available to Disney+ subscribers without the extra charge.
Mulan was unusual for a major Disney production because its release strategy shifted from a planned cinema launch to a prominent streaming debut. Some territories still received theatrical screenings, depending on local conditions and distribution arrangements.
The film’s streaming release is separate from its production history and from Disney’s earlier animated adaptation. The 1998 Mulan was a conventional theatrical animated feature, while the 2020 version became an important example of pandemic-era changes in film distribution.
