The Battle of Restigouche was a naval engagement on the Restigouche River in June and July 1760, during the French and Indian War. The river flows into Chaleur Bay, between present-day Quebec and New Brunswick. French ships had entered the river seeking shelter and trying to deliver supplies and reinforcements to New France after the fall of Quebec.

A Royal Navy squadron under Commodore John Byron pursued the French flotilla. The French used the river’s shallow water, shore batteries, and sunken vessels to obstruct the British advance. French naval personnel fought alongside Acadian and Mi’kmaq forces, making the engagement both a maritime battle and a local defensive action.

The British victory destroyed or captured most of the French shipping and ended France’s last serious attempt to resupply its forces in Canada. It did not occur on the St. Lawrence, Hudson, or Monongahela Rivers. The wreck of the French frigate Le Machault later became an important archaeological source for understanding the battle.
