On which Islamic date is Eid al-Adha observed each year?

The story behind the answer

Eid al-Adha is observed on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah, the tenth day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah.

Dhu al-Hijjah is the final month of the Islamic calendar and is associated with the annual pilgrimage, or Hajj, to Mecca. Eid al-Adha begins during the Hajj period and follows the day of Arafah, one of the pilgrimage’s central days.

The festival is often called the Feast of Sacrifice. Its traditions commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim, known in the Bible as Abraham, to obey God’s command. Muslim families may perform an animal sacrifice where permitted and distribute portions to relatives, neighbours, and people in need.

Eid al-Adha is separate from Eid al-Fitr, which occurs on 1 Shawwal after Ramadan. Both festivals are determined by the Islamic lunar calendar.
