On which Islamic date does Eid al-Fitr begin?

The story behind the answer

Eid al-Fitr begins on 1 Shawwal, the first day after Ramadan.

The date is determined within the Islamic lunar calendar rather than by a fixed Gregorian date. Since Ramadan may last 29 or 30 days, Eid al-Fitr can fall on different Gregorian dates, and communities may observe it on different days depending on moon-sighting methods.

The festival marks the end of the Ramadan fast. Muslims commonly attend a special congregational Eid prayer, give charity, visit relatives, and share festive meals. Fasting on the day of Eid al-Fitr is prohibited.

Eid al-Fitr is different from Eid al-Adha, which begins on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah during the annual Hajj season. The two festivals have separate dates and histories.
