On which handheld system did Pokémon Red and Blue first appear?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Red and Blue first appeared on the Nintendo Game Boy.

The games were designed around the original monochrome handheld, whose simple hardware helped shape their visual style and portable multiplayer features. Players could connect two Game Boys with a Game Link Cable to battle or trade Pokémon, making the system’s social functionality central to the experience.

Japan originally received Pokémon Red and Green in 1996. International versions, released later, were called Pokémon Red and Blue. The games remained compatible with the original Game Boy, although they could also be played on later members of the Game Boy family.

Pokémon Yellow followed as an enhanced version. It was also released for the Game Boy and changed the opening adventure so that Pikachu became the player’s initial partner. Later remakes, including Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, moved the original adventure to the Game Boy Advance, but those were separate titles rather than the first releases.
