On which day of the week do the Gospels say Jesus rose from the dead?

The story behind the answer

The Gospels say Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week, Sunday. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John all place the discovery of the empty tomb on that day, following Jesus’ crucifixion and burial.

The accounts describe women coming to the tomb early in the morning and finding it open. Mary Magdalene is named in all four Gospel traditions, although the other visitors and details differ. The Gospel writers present the resurrection as the central event of Christian faith.

Because the Jewish Sabbath ran from Friday evening to Saturday evening, Sunday was the day after the Sabbath. Early Christians gathered on Sunday in connection with the resurrection, and the day became known as the Lord’s Day. Easter commemorates the resurrection, while Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion.
