On which day of the week did the women find Jesus’ empty tomb, according to the Gospels?

The story behind the answer

According to the Gospels, the women found Jesus’ empty tomb on the first day of the week.

The Synoptic Gospels describe women coming to the tomb after the Sabbath, at or around dawn. The first day of the Jewish week corresponds to Sunday in the conventional modern calendar. John likewise begins its empty-tomb account with Mary Magdalene coming early on the first day of the week.

The accounts differ in the names and number of women mentioned, the timing details, and the messengers encountered. They agree on the day and place the discovery after Jesus’ burial before the beginning of the new week.

This wording is preferable to simply saying “Sunday” because it follows the language used in the Gospel narratives. It also distinguishes the discovery from the crucifixion, which the accounts place before the Sabbath.
