On which day of the lunar month does Chuseok occur in Korea?

The story behind the answer

Chuseok occurs on the 15th day of the eighth month in the traditional Korean lunisolar calendar.

That date is the full-moon day of the eighth lunar month, which is why moon viewing and harvest imagery are closely connected with the festival. Because the lunisolar calendar does not align exactly with the Gregorian calendar, Chuseok moves between September and October each year.

Chuseok is often compared with China’s Mid-Autumn Festival because both occur on the same traditional calendar date. However, Chuseok has its own Korean customs, including ancestral rites, visits to family graves, songpyeon, and major family reunions.

The date should not be confused with the first day of the lunar month or with a fixed Gregorian date. The official holiday period commonly includes the day before and the day after the festival itself.
