On which continent is the Amazon rainforest located?

The story behind the answer

The Amazon rainforest is located in South America. It spreads across the Amazon Basin, with the largest share in Brazil and additional areas in several neighboring countries.

The rainforest covers parts of Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. Brazil contains roughly 60% of the forest, while Peru and Colombia hold the next-largest portions. Because the Amazon crosses national borders, it is a continental ecosystem rather than a forest belonging to one country.

The Amazon is associated with the Amazon River and its enormous network of tributaries, but the rainforest and the river basin are not exactly the same area. The basin includes landscapes beyond dense rainforest, such as wetlands, savannas, and montane regions. The forest is also called Amazonia or the Amazon Jungle, and it represents more than half of the world's remaining tropical rainforest by area.
