October 28, 1886
Answer
October 28, 1886
The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886.
The colossal statue, formally titled Liberty Enlightening the World, was a gift from the people of France to the United States. French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed it, while engineer Gustave Eiffel helped create its internal iron framework.
The statue was assembled on Bedloe’s Island in New York Harbor, now called Liberty Island. President Grover Cleveland presided over the dedication ceremony. A large parade in New York City accompanied the event and helped establish the ticker-tape parade tradition.
The statue’s torch-bearing arm had been displayed earlier, including at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The statue is often associated with immigration, although Ellis Island opened as an immigration station several years after the dedication, in 1892.
