The engrossed Declaration of Independence was primarily signed on August 2, 1776, in Philadelphia.
Congress adopted the Declaration on July 4, but the formal parchment copy was prepared afterward. On July 19, Congress ordered that the declaration be engrossed on parchment with the title “The unanimous declaration of the thirteen United States of America.” Most historians identify August 2 as the main signing date.
The distinction matters because the document's printed versions and later parchment copy followed different stages. The first broadside printing, produced by John Dunlap, circulated soon after adoption. The engrossed copy was the formal version that received the well-known group of signatures.
Many popular accounts say everyone signed on July 4 because the document bears that date. That date records adoption, not necessarily the day every delegate signed. Some delegates signed later, making the signing process more extended than the anniversary date suggests.
